This one week course (single day registration is also possible) is ideal for both freelance and in-house translators and interpreters looking to develop and broaden their skills.

Overview

Our team of professional and experienced course leaders will each offer a one day masterclass on a specific topic:

Day One:       Media Interpreting – Dr Pedro Castillo

This masterclass will enable you to experience the challenges of interpreting in the media. It will cover a diversity of interpreting settings and practices which are intrinsic to the media: TV, radio, internet, documentaries and filming. The training will be hands-on and will include interpreting exercises in our media studios at Heriot-Watt University in order to replicate live media interpreting events.

Day Two:      Working with CAT tools– Mr Ramon Inglada

This workshop is a practical one and will consist of demonstrations and practical exercises in one of our fit for purpose computer laboratories. The day will begin with an introduction to CAT tools in general followed by a presentation and overview of SDL Trados Studios 2015. You will acquire a general practical understanding of this tool, enabling you to translate several different file types through practical translation exercises.

Day Three:   Understanding medical terminology – Dr Michael Richardson

The field of medicine is a very technical one and one which we can be afraid to enter. Michael Richardson, doctor in medicine and renowned linguist, will give you an insight into this world. Using his knowledge and experience as both a medical doctor and a linguist, he will explore ways of breaking down the barriers in order to give you a better understanding of this complex area.  This workshop will pick apart medical language with the aim of developing an understanding of how root words, prefixes and suffices provide descriptive meaning that can be used to support accurate interpreting and translation in a health care setting

Day Four:     The legal systems in the UK – Ms Yvonne McLaren

Law is a complex area particularly in the UK where there are two distinct legal systems. This workshop will explore the challenges of working within the legal field in general and examine the differences between the two UK systems. Our experienced course leader will also provide explanation and clarification of the often confusing legal terminology thereby enabling you to improve your skills in this area.

Day Five:      Improving your Business and Marketing skills as a freelancer – Ms Penny Karanasiou

As a freelancer do you often wonder how to promote yourself, how to get onto the international market, how to reach agencies or how to become recognised by a national or international professional organisation? This masterclass will give you the tools to help you do this and tips on how to increase your client base. It will look at tailoring your CV to suit the market: explore strategies to help you stand out from the crowd as a translator/interpreter; recommend ways to improve communication with your clients and many other issues such as pricing; bookkeeping and customer satisfaction.
